BMW i Electric Vehicles
BMW i represents a visionary electric vehicle and mobility service concept, inspiring design, and a new understanding of premium which is strongly defined by sustainability. With BMW i, the BMW Group is pursuing a holistic approach: utilizing customized vehicle concepts, a focus on sustainability in the entire value creation chain and a complete series of supplementary mobility services, BMW i redefines the understanding of individual mobility. The BMW i LifeDrive vehicle architecture was specifically developed to meet the technical requirements of electric mobility. Two separate units combine maximum safety and optimum performance. The Life module consists of the lightweight and high-strength carbon passenger cell. The Drive module consists mainly of aluminum and includes the eDrive drive technology as well as the chassis and suspension. This allows a lower center of gravity for precise handling and maneuverability.
Safety of eDrive is a core criteria of BMW i product design. Numerous measures enable safe operation even in the case of an accident e.g.:
− Completely isolated high voltage battery unit.
− Position of the high voltage battery unit allows high mechanical protection even during an accident.
− Automatic cut off of the high voltage battery unit during an accident involving an airbag deployment.
− Continuous monitoring of the isolation and other safety relevant criteria in case of failure.
All systems demonstrate a high level of safety during crash tests and regular test procedures. In internal tests,
systems are even tested far beyond legal requirements.
